The context
Why this house
Many women who arrive in Athens with their children have taken charge of their lives under the hardest conditions. What they lack is a safe place to land. Since the rent subsidies of the state HELIOS programme were cut, more and more families cannot find anywhere to stay.
At the Victoria Community Centre, run by Glocal Roots since 2024, we support people with language classes, legal advice, psychosocial support and help finding work. The house closes the gap that remained: a safe roof over their heads while women plan their next step.
What happens now
1
Renovation. The house is structurally sound but needs work before families can move in: bathrooms, kitchens, wiring and fire safety.
2
Furnishing. Nine rooms, two kitchens and shared spaces need beds, wardrobes, kitchen equipment and everything that makes a home.
To protect the women and children, we never share the address or show faces. That’s why you’ll see rooms here, not people.
